Giro Rosa 2014 Stage 1

Marianne Vos claimed stage 1 of this year’s Giro Rosa today – effectively transferring the leader’s jersey from her teammate Annemiek van Vleuten, who won yesterday’s opening prologue, to her shoulders.

Meanwhile, Elisa Longo Borghini finished in second place ahead of Pauline Ferrend Prevot, who rounded out the podium in third spot as the second Rabo-Liv rider.

Race Details

Today’s 95.2 kilometer stage got underway in the town of Santa Maria, in the south of Italy, that featured 11 laps around 8.6 kilometer circuit with gradients ranging from 10% and 13%.

Despite numerous attacks throughout the race, it wasn’t until Van Vleuten and South African champion Ashleigh Moolman joined  forces to create a slight gap of roughly a minute over the peloton.

Shortly thereafter, the duo was joined by last year’s Chongming World Cup winner, Tatiana Riabchenko. However, it wasn’t long before the three riders were tracked down and caught by the ensuing peloton under the auspices of the Rabo-Liv team.

From there, Vos, Elisa Longo Borghini and her teammate Audrey Cordon attacked, and subsequently distanced themselves from the field.

However, during the final lap, Vos succeeded in outsprinting Longo Borghini by a gap of more than 25 meters to seize the victory.
