Students Build Flying Bicycle Powered Airplane in 1962

Travel back to Southampton University, England in 1962 as students build a Flying Bicycle Airplane that they spent months working on.

What kid hasn’t wanted to make their bicycle fly? These teenagers back in 1962 took on the challenge to create a person-powered plane. In this clip, you see the young engineers putting the contraption together – complete with "old-timey narrative".

The final plane had a wingspan of 80 feet and weighed about 100 pounds. As you can see in the footage, the pilot had no easy task getting it off the ground.
