Vuelta a Espana 2014 Stage 1

Movistar won the opening team time trial of this year’s Vuelta a Espana today, moving their rider Jonathan Castroviejo into the first red leader’s jersey.

Today’s stage featured a winding, technical 12.6 kilometer course through the streets of Jerez de la Frontera, at the southern tip of the Iberian Peninsula.

Cannondale initially set the fastest time during today’s TTT. However, their benchmark was ultimately eclipsed by Team Movistar, who covered the course 6 seconds faster – with a time of 14:13.

Meanwhile, Chris Froome and his Sky Team found themselves in a 27-second deficit they could close – relegating them to 11th place .

Alberto Contador ‘s Tinkoff-Saxo team crossed the line with 7th fastest time, while Trek Factory Racing rebounded nicely after crashing in training to claim fourth place.

The Vuelta continues tomorrow, with a mostly flat 174 kilometer stage from Algeciras to San Fernando.
