Vuelta a Espana 2014 Stage 10

Tony Martin (Omega Pharma-Quick Step) won stage 10 of this year’s Vuelta a España today, after winning the 36.7 kilometer time trial from Real Monasterio de Santa María de Veruela to Borja.

Race Highlights

Fabian Cancellara (Trek Factory Racing) set an early best time of 47:13. However, his mark was eventually surpassed by Martin, as the world champion blaze through today’s course with a final best time of 47:02.

Meanwhile, race leader Nairo Quintana (Movistar) was involved in a dramatic crash after the first time check, as the Colombian rider was seen flipping over his handlebars after making contact with a guardrail. Fortunately, he was able to remount and finish the race, albeit at a greatly reduced effort.

However, said crash, forced Quintana to lose more than three minutes to Alberto Contador (Tinkoff-Saxo), who now wears the leader’s red jersey.

“It’s a shame about Quintana,” said Contador. “You had to be very careful throughout the entire stage. My body is feeling better by the day. I hope it holds out until the end of the race.”

Other riders such as Cancellara and Laurens Ten Dam also voiced their concerns about the lay-out of the course.

“It’s not just the up and down, the asphalt has nothing to do with a time trial, in my opinion,” said the former world time trial champion. “It will be even harder for the GC guys. I hope they find better roads next time. I did what I could, that was my goal today. My only doubt was my safety for myself, and I could not really find the rhythm,” said Cancellara.

“It’s a hard time trial,” said Laurens Ten Dam (Belkin) “I don’t like TTs, I like climbing. I think the first part was really good, but on the downhill part, I couldn’t find my rhythm. I tried to stay in position as good as possible.”

In other results, Chris Froome (Sky) finished 10th, 1:32 behind Martin, a disappointing result for a rider many consider to be peerless when it comes to the time trial.
