Vuelta a Espana 2014 Stage 2

Nacer Bouhanni (FDJ.fr) claimed stage 2 in this year’s Vuelta a Espana today, with a perfectly timed sprint ahead of John Degenkolb (Giant-Shimano) and Roberto Ferrari (Lampre-Merida) in San Fernanado – after 174.4 kilometers of racing from Algeciras  to  San Fernando.

"We worked very hard for this," Bouhanni said. "The last moment we were in a great position. It’s a great day for me and for my whole team. We have to take our chances when we can. Each time I have a chance to win, I will take it. Maybe I can win a couple stages. Maybe I will give myself the goal of taking the points jersey."

Following today’s results, Movistar’s Alejandro Valverde (Movistar) now wears the red leader’s jersey ahead of his teammates Nairo Quintana and Andrey Amador.

“You always have to be at the front, to avoid crashes or splits in the peloton, and that’s why I am taking over the leader’s jersey,” said Valverde. “Tomorrow we’ll see if we work to defend the lead, or let it go with a breakaway.

“Perhaps there are some teammates who could take over the jersey. It’s clear Nairo is in good condition, and he’ll be better than me in the mountains. Now I am in the leader’s jersey, so let’s enjoy it, and then we’ll see what happens in the race.”
