Primoz Roglic (Team LottoNl-Jumbo) claimed a surprising victory in today’s Individual Time Trial (ITT) at the Giro d’Italia, after setting a benchmark time of 52:45 along the 40.5 kilometer route in Chianti, that withstood the challenge of some 140+ riders throughout the day.
Meanwhile, race leader Gianluca Brambilla (Etixx – Quick-Step) finished a respectable 17th place, to hold onto his maglia rosa, with a one second lead over teammate Bob Jungels.
In other results, Vincenzo Nibali (Astana) finished ahead of his principle rivals, but he was only able to gain a handful of seconds over Alejandro Valverde (Movistar) and Mikel Landa (Team Sky), who both rode consistently during today’s race against the clock.
In the meantime, Rafa Majka lost a few seconds in the fight for pink, but managed to finish without losing too much time, while Esteban Chaves (Orica GreenEdge) put in a valiant effort as well, but still managed to lose over a minute.
Things didn’t go well for Ilnur Zakarin (Team Katusha) however, who crashed twice during today’s ITT, which served to rule-out the Katusha rider from even a top 20 finish.
Rigoberto Uran (Cannondale) had an even worse result, as the Colombian rider consistently lost time throughout the stage, ultimately finishing four minutes off of Roglic’s time, and nearly two minutes down on Nibali.
Tom Dumoulin (Giant Alpecin) also had a forgettable performance today, which led to the former race leader to be dropped from the top 10 and pushed back to 17th place.
