Katusha Suspends Two Riders for Drunkenness Before Start of the Vuelta

With the loss of Giampaolo Caruso and Luca Paolini due to doping offenses, Katusha is already down two riders for the start of this year’s Vuelta a Espana.

Yet, the Russian team has reportedly sacked two more of its riders today, as a result of a drinking binge that allegedly occurred earlier this week.

According to reports, both Yuri Trofimov and Egor Silin have been dismissed by their team for blatant public intoxication.

The two riders, who took part in last weekend’s Olympic road race test Rio, were reportedly discovered in a state of drunkenness at the airport -ahead of their flight back.

Trofimov and Silin, were scheduled to start the Vuelta tomorrow in support of Joaquin Rodriguez, but both riders have since been replaced by Tiago Machado and Gatis Smukulis.

For Trofimov, the incident come as little consequence, since this was to be his last season with Katusha anyway, as he heads off to Tinkoff-Saxo for 2016.
