Volta a Catalunya 2016 Stage 5

Team Sky’s Wout Poels soloed to victory in today’s stage 5 of the Volta a Catalunya, after riding clear from a seven-rider breakaway group that he had been a part for most of the day.

Despite today’s mostly flat 187.2 kilometer stage from Rialp to Valls, which had all the makings of a sprint finale, Poels spoiled the day with his late escape, ultimately holding-off the chase for the final 15 kilometers, to cross the finish more than 10 seconds ahead of his closest rivals, Dario Cataldo (Astana) and Wanty Group-Gobert’s Gaetan Bille.

Meanwhile, Nairo Quintana (Movistar) finished safely in the peloton, to maintain his grip on the overall race lead by seven seconds over Alberto Contador (Tinkoff).

Race Highlights

Poels had been part of small breakaway group containing Kanstantsin Siutsou (Dimension Data), Carlos Verona (Etixx – Quick-Step), Dario Cataldo (Astana), Tosh Van der Sande (Lotto – Soudal), Jan Polanc (Lampre – Merida), Gaetan Bille and Frederik Veuchelen (Wanty – Groupe Gobert), before making his winning move along the final climb of the Alto de Lila. And, despite a valiant effort on the part of his former breakaway companions, there was no reeling the Belgian rider back in during the closing kilometers – earning Team Sky its first stage victory in this year’s Volta a Catalunya.
